In April 2018 ANAS, an Italian motorway concession, commissioned T.net to create a Proof of Concept (PoC) on a section of the Rome-Fiumicino A91 motorway for the assessment of data and voice roaming on moving vehicles through Wi-Fi In Motion.
The choice to consider network coverage through the Wi-Fi In Motion protocol was made on the basis of the need to ensure high QoS standards, high performance, reliable and stable communications to vehicles and people moving on the motorway section.
IN SHORT
Client: One of the main Italian motorway concessionaires;
Sector: Services;
The challenge: To evaluate the performance in terms of data and voice roaming for moving vehicles;
The solution: Access Point Extreme Networks;
The end result: Excellent roaming performance for voice and data communication in moving vehicles.
Purpose
To maintain a communication level (2.4 Ghz) for Voice and Data on moving vehicles even in demanding speed conditions (130 km / h).
Methods
High performance radio;
Custom Radio Parameters;
Custom antennas;
Detailed investigation.
Results
Voice and data communication level of quality and performance as per specifications;
Roaming between 30ms – 50ms: reliable and stable communications to vehicles moving on motorways;
Roaming support tested at 130 Km / h with cells every 250 meters (5Ghz) or 300 meters (2.4 Ghz) at 12 meters high and in the center of 4 motorway lanes.
Technology used
The tests were performed using the Extreme Networks manufacturer’s Access Points, named 7562.
Extreme Networks also actively collaborated with T.net during the design phase of the project and followed the results of the tests carried out in the field. This is just a confirmation that Extreme Networks is a valuable partner of T.net confirming the strong collaboration between the two companies.
